The workshop will review some of the most important considerations for the safe exhibition of library and archive materials. The effects of exposure to light, heat, and humidity will be discussed, and display techniques demonstrated. Guidance on the exhibition of books and other library materials will be given, and examples of good and unacceptable display practices shown. Demonstrations of the construction of book cradles will be shown. Participants will be led to further resources on the subject, and should develop a greater awareness of the dangers and opportunities of exhibition. The workshop is suitable for all those involved in the selection of materials for exhibition, and those involved in mounting and positioning the exhibition.

Putting Theories into Practice is part of a multi-year series of preservation workshops conducted through the South Central Regional Library Council. Each workshop is designed to address preservation issues that occur in all libraries. This series is supported in part by a New York State Conservation/Preservation Discretionary Grant from the New York State Library Division of Library Development.
