Librarians and support staff who are interested in exploring the potential for libraries and "eBranches" in Second Life and virtual worlds. People from all types of libraries looking for new communications tools and strategies for the Web 2.0/Library 2.0 environment. |
An introduction to libraries in virtual worlds and Second Life! This half-day workshop will introduce people to Second Life and the libraries that are being built in this online digital world. With more than 10 million registered avatars, Second Life has main and branch libraries, and subject-specific libraries (e.g., genealogy). What are these libraries doing and why do librarians feel the need to build them? What are the benefits to real-life libraries and librarians of having a presence in Second Life?
This workshop will include real-time tours of the libraries in Second Life, as well as other pertinent areas, and a lively discussion of why we might (or might not) care about virtual world librarianship.
Jill Hurst-Wahl of Hurst Associates, Ltd. is an information consultant, speaker and author/blogger, who presents frequently on the use of social networking tools. Known as "Jillianna Suisei" in Second Life, Hurst-Wahl is a member of two active library groups and often gives tours of Info Island, an area that offers a variety of library and information services to Second Life residents. In real life, Hurst-Wahl has become a Second Life advocate by giving interviews, writing articles, and speaking formally and informally about Second Life. During 2007, she taught about Second Life for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Syracuse University. At Internet Librarian 2007, Hurst-Wahl was part of a team that gave several presentations and conducted a workshop on Second Life.
