Audience:

Librarians and staff from all types of libraries responsible for cataloging and technical services in today’s rapidly changing library environment.

 

Participants will learn how FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) came into being, why it’s important, what its concepts are, and how it may impact catalogs and cataloging.

 

Attendees will also learn about the RDA (Resource Description and Access) and its implementation schedule.  Learn also how it is influenced by FRBR and how it will differ from AACR2. Here’s your chance to play a little with the preliminary web product and the rules themselves.

 

Part I, FRBR – Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records

A.       FRBR background – students will learn:

1.        Origin of the FRBR study

2.        Place of the FRBR model in relation to previous models

B.       FRBR concepts – students will learn:

1.        Entity-Relationship model

2.        The Group  1, 2, 3 entities used in the FRBR model

3.        The Relationships identified in the FRBR model

4.        Attributes in the FRBR model

5.        The User Tasks identified in the FRBR Model

C.       FRBR implementation – students will examine:

1.        Implications of the FRBR model for cataloging

2.        Some actual use of FRBR principles in information access products

 

Part II, RDA – Resource Description and Access

A.      RDA background and basics – students will learn:

1.         Origin of RDA as the successor to AACR2

2.        Place of RDA in relation to previous cataloging codes

3.        The RDA development process and timeline

4.        The overall structure of RDA (as envisioned to date)

B.       RDA implementation – students will examine:

1.         The prototype web-product for online access to RDA

2.        Some comparisons of cataloging between AACR2 and RDA

 

John F. Myers is an Associate Librarian at Union College, where he serves as Catalog Librarian.  He is a member of ALA’s Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA), which is responsible for the U.S. input on the drafts of Resource Description and Access (RDA).
