·        News from Stevens-German Library, Hartwick CollegeBeth Orgeron is the new director and Shelley Wallace, Archivist has resigned.

 

·        On Valentine’s Day, 2006, the Board of Regents of the State of New York voted to grant an absolute charter in the first instance to the Chemung County Library District. The Chemung County Library District, approved by the voters with a 68% majority, encompasses the Steele Memorial Library, the Horseheads Free Library, the Big Flats Library, the West Elmira Library, the Van Etten Library, and the Chemung County Bookmobile. No library names or address will change. Congratulations on the vote of confidence by Chemung County and the Regents!

 

·        Karin Wikoff, Ithaca College has won the Competent Toastmaster Award. Upon the completion of 10 focused, five-to-seven-minute speeches, members earn the title of Competent Toastmaster (CTM). Karin began her journey to CTM on February 1, 2005, when she completed her first speech. As a result of completing her CTM within a two-year period, she will be reimbursed the cost of one year’s membership dues by the Office of Human Resources as recognition of this professional accomplishment.

 

·        Janet A. McCue, Director of Mann Library and Associate University Librarian for Life Sciences, Cornell University, has been selected for the 2006 Frye Leadership Institute. The Frye Institute program is aimed at individuals who have a keen interest in issues of information management on campuses and a commitment to serve in leadership positions.

 

·        Joan Ormondroyd, a retired Cornell librarian, received the 2006 Laura Holmberg Award presented by Anna Holmberg. Joan was honored for her efforts in distributing books to day care families and low-income families. 

 

·        Library Journal’s list of “Movers and Shakers” in the library profession for 2006 is out – and on the list is CUL’s very own Ira Revels! The article, at

http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6312502.html, identifies Ira as “Hyper-Active.” Anyone who knows the range of activities into which Ira throws herself can only agree. Ira’s commitment to the profession in general and the importance of diversity within the profession is absolute.

 

·        Gail Barraco, Director of Broome-Tioga BOCES SLS will be leaving her job on May 12, 2006.

 

·        Karen Dillon, Administrative Assistant at Four County Library System, will be leaving her job in June and moving to Baltimore, Maryland. Karen’s husband has accepted a position at UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County).

 

·        Laurie Hubbard, Law Library Clerk at Charles B. Swartwood Law Library in Elmira will be moving to the District Office in Binghamton, the first of May to take on a number of new responsibilities. A new professional librarian for Elmira has been appointed effective May 4, 2006. His name is Jean-Paul Vivian and, although he is currently at a US Courts Library in Los Angeles, he was formerly with the Appellate Division 4th Dept. Library in Rochester.

 

·        Diane Hillman, Research Librarian at Cornell University Library, is the new Coordinator for the ALA Library and Information Technology Association (LITA). Diane's two-year term will begin in June, at the conclusion of ALA's Annual Conference.

 

·        Lana Meissner, Pam Lakin, and Janet Williams of Herrick Memorial Library, Alfred University are retiring. We will miss you all, but our best wishes for the next part of your lives!

 

·        Stephanie Wilson, Director of Steuben-Allegany BOCES SLS, has a new email address, it is swilson@gstboces.org
